Northumberland Triathlon Festival 2007 - Updates May 30th

The Children's Duathlon will take place on Saturday afternoon (1pm) and will take place on closed roads around the park.  Entry forms for the children's race are available via the link above.

The Team Time Trial is being replaced with a Relay Event.  This is to try and make it more attractive to people taking part in the Sunday race, novices and basically opening it up to anyone.  It will be a 400m swim, 15km cycle and 3km run.  So you will need a swimmer, a cyclist and a runner - the event will be a mass start.  The event will start at about 3pm when the children's event has finished.

The Olympic / Standard Distance Event on the Sunday hasn't changed.  The swim will be in Ladyburn Lake at Druridge Bay, the bike course will be a lap circuit and will be on closed roads and the run will be 3 laps around the lake.  The course is electronically timed and is being GPS measured so will be 1500m swim, 40km cycle and 10km run.  Prizes for this event are: £750 for 1st, £500 for 2nd, £300 for 3rd, £200 for 4th and £100 for 5th - these are the same for male and female and have been donated by a sponsor.

Entries for the Relay and the Standard Distance event are available here

Also during the Saturday will be Dance exhibitions and taster sessions (based on Swimming, Cycling and Running), Farmers / local producers market / healthy food and cooking, Taster sessions on the Lake (eg. Canoe, Sailing etc), Healthy walks for all the family, "Rock It" climbing wall and Kite flying on the beach.

Northumberland Triathlon Festival

The Northumberland Tri Festival will move from its June date to the middle of September in 2007. The dates have been set for the 15th & 16th September. The weekend will consist of the One Life Kids Duathlon and two new events:

On the Saturday (15th Sept) evening there will be the One Life Supersprint Team Time Trial. Teams of three will set off at 1min intervals and then swim together, cycle as a team and run together, times will be taken on the last man across the line. Distances will be 500m swim, 15km cycle and 3.5km run with a maximum of 50 teams.

The other new event will be the One Life Standard Distance Triathlon on the Sunday (16th Sept).  In 2007 this will be the North East Regional Standard Distance championships.  The event will take place on closed roads with electronic timing.  The event which is being supported by Northumberland Sport and Culture 10 has a three year development plan, which will see it become a national ranking event in 2008 and making it capable of hosting a World Age Group Championship Qualifying race in 2009.

The swim (1500m) is being held in Ladyburn Lake , the cycle (40km) on a several lap course which is completely closed to traffic and the run (10km) taking place around Druridge Bay Country Park .  The event will cater for 400 athletes.  We are looking forward to attracting some of Britain’s best Triathletes to the region.

In addition to the events taking place above there will be other activities around the park on the Saturday.  Activtities such as: cycle skills, dance, photography competition, farmers market and a lifestyle bus.

Tri Festival Report 2006

Tony Weed & Scott HolmesSaturday 17th and Sunday 18th June saw the second Northumberland Triathlon Festival run by One Life and hosted by Druridge Bay Country Park .  The festival has been designed to encourage all levels of particpation from children as young as 8 years old though to children as old as Santa Claus.  With the One Life Kids Duathlon and the North East Senior Aquathlon Championships

The event proved to be a massive hit particularly with the children who took part in the first One Life Kids Duathlon on the Saturday.  60 children, aged between 8 and 16, took part in the run – cycle – run event around Druridge Bay Country Park .  There were some fantastic performances and it was great to see children having fun in a variation of our sport.

Also on the Saturday One Life hosted the North East Aquathlon Championships.  The 750m swim in the lake followed by a 5km run was won by Scott Holmes from TFN Orca Racing who caught and passed Tony Weed (hartlepooltriathletes.com) on the run.  There was also a notable performance from Matthew Jones (NE Regional Academy) who finished third although still a junior.

In the women's race Donna James (Durham Tri) raced from 3rd to 1st during the 5km run to overhaul Lisa Tweddle (NE31 Tri) and Angharad Porteous.

Sunday saw most of those who had competed in the Aquathlon line up again with 120 other athletes for the Castle Morpeth Triathlon.  The Triathlon, which consists of a 750m swim in the lake, followed by a 28km cycle around the coast of Northumberland and a 5km run around the lake, saw all the athletes take to the start in the lake.

Tony Weed (hartlepooltriathletes.com) was first out of the water and onto the bike, in front of Scott Holmes, Chris Philpott (East Coast Tri) and Roger Godley (Cleveland Biketraks).  During the cycle leg, Weed, Holmes and Godley etched out a lead over the rest of the field which was led back into transition by Phil Gray from One Life.

Holmes dropped back on the run (Saturday’s exertions obviously taking it’s toll!) to leave Weed and Godley up front.  However, storming runs from Rob West (unattached) and Phil Coulson (Tri London – but heralds from the North East) saw them eating into the two leaders.  In the end Tony Weed held on to win, from Rob West, Roger Godley and Phil Coulson.

In the ladies race, Eve Blanshard (Wakefield Tri) led out of the water from Liz Hunter (Tri Lakeland) and Caroline Findlay (Alnwick Tri).  Out on the bike, Donna James (Durham Tri) put in a storming cycle to lead back into transition and out onto the run ahead of Caroline Findlay.  During the run James held onto her lead, whilst Findlay gallantly tried to close the gap couldn’t do anything about the dominant James.  The final standing are listed below:

Women.

  1. Donna James ( Durham Tri)
  2. Caroline Findlay (Alnwick Tri)
  3. Jane McLoughlin (Hartlepooltriathletes.com)

 Men.

  1. Tony Weed (Hartlepooltriathletes.com)
  2. Rob West (unattached)
  3. Roger Godley ( Cleveland Biketraks)
