Background to Triathlon:

In Hawaii in 1979 three athletes, each proficient in their chosen discipline of swimming, cycling and running, challenged each other to a race, each claiming he was fitter than the other two.

The distances had to be worth it, and so they devised a grueling race consisting of a 3.9km open water swim followed by a 180km cycle and finishing with a full marathon.  The Triathlon was born.

Over the past twenty five years, the sport has grown in its popularity all over the world and was officially accepted as an Olympic sport in 2000.

The sport of Triathlon in the UK has been selected as one of only ten priority sports to prepare and submit to UK Sport a “one stop plan” which will determine government investment in the sport for the four-year Olympic cycle 2005-2009.

Participation in Triathlon is relatively small when compared to many other sports prioritised by government.  Triathlon has however demonstrated real potential for growth with the British Triathlon Association’s membership increasing by 100% in three years, by most event entries having to close in advance of their closing dates.  In general terms the number of people wanting to participate in the sport is outstripping the availability of places in events.

The government’s participation target for 2020 is that 70% of the population will take part in a minimum of 30 minutes of physical activity five times per week. Participation is currently around 32%, of which 43% is made up of swimming, cycling and running.  Government targets will only be reached with a mixture of initiatives aimed at both young people and adults.  Triathlon is a lifestyle sport, which promotes health and is attractive to young people and adults.

The governing body of this country, British Triathlon, now has a membership of 25000 people from all backgrounds, abilities and fitness levels.
